EXCURSI0N #
1 ~ Legends & Myths of
Ko'olau-poko
We'll
be visiting half a dozen wahi pana
(legendary/ sacred) sites while trekking through varied terrain
with beautiful views of the natural environment and changing
topography. Total walking is about 2.5 miles.
Average about ½ mile at each site. Most trails are nature
walks however some sites have a little incline so maybe easy level
hikes. Lunch is beach picnic style, guests are welcome to
bring lunch, or lunch can be purchased at a local drive inn.
Guests can also go for a short swim, body surf, or beachcomb after
lunch. This excursion is only offered Monday and Thursday and is an
all day trip. Pick-up is at 7:30 a.m. and we will drop you off
about 4:30 p.m. |
Sites Visited
Include Kapena Falls, swimming
hole, bathing pools, petrogylphs (rock
carvings). Mauna Ala/ Royal
Mausoleum, sovereign land, sacred burial site. Nu`uanu Nuku, mountain
pass, Pali Lookout, vista view, battle site. Na Pohaku O Hauwahine,

EXCURSION 2 ~ Sacred Sites of O'ahu's North Shore
Kukaniloko (Royal Birthing Stone/
Heiau) ~ Perhaps one of the most sacred sites on O'ahu. A chief or
chieftess born here was assured high-ranking status. There is
intimate secrecy about this place that only a trained guide will
know. Be careful not to go with some of the
haole [foreign] owned eco-tour companies,
who don't know the culture and could misrepresent the site. Leina ka
uhane (Leaping of Souls rock) Hawaiians believe in a life after death. But there are only a
few entrances to Po O Kumuhonua [Hawaiian's heaven], and you have
to be shown these places by your aumakua [ancestral deities] after
death or you don't get in. This is about a four-mile hike
along a rugged windswept coastline; we can investigate tide pools
along the way and do a little beachcombing. Lunch is
no-host in Hale'iwa town; I suggest plate lunches, picnic style at
one of the many beach parks. After lunch we head up to
Pu'u O Mahuka heiau The largest ancient temple site on O'ahu. Last
dedicated as a war temple with human sacrifices. Last site is
Kaneaukai Ko'a A fishing shrine dedicated to one of the forms
of the god Kane. It sits on the west bluff of Waimea
Bay. A quick swim at a nearby beach could bring an
encounter with the green sea turtles, we'll stop for shaved ice in
Hale'iwa before heading back into Honolulu. This tour
involves more walking than Excursion # 1, a total of almost 5
miles, and most of it is one trail. Offered only on Saturdays and
is a full-day activity. Pick-up time is at 7:30 a.m. and we will
drop you off around 4:30 p.m. |

Excursion #3 Half day,
mornings Sacred Sites Walking Eco-tour Can't spend a whole day? This half day excursions packs in 3 to 4

the front half of our Full day Legends & Myths of Ko`olau Poko
ecotour. We'll pick you up at your hotel around 7:30 am and return
you about 12 noon. Sites include a wetland forest with
waterfalls and petroglyphs, ruins of an ancient temple, mountain
pass battle site and the burial sites of our Kings &
Queens. Total walking about 1.5
miles. Easy level nature walking. |
